A friend of mine has a dress she’s worn on six first dates. It’s not her best dress. That’s the whole point.
Cream, bias-cut, slip. Nothing interesting happening at the neckline. She bought it in 2021 for reasons she can’t quite remember and has worn it, by her count, on every first date since. Not because it always works in the romantic sense but because it works in a more important sense. She knows who she is when she’s wearing it.
I find this kind of ritual dressing genuinely fascinating. The piece that isn’t about the occasion. It’s about the person. The garment that tells you quietly: you’re ready. You have your position on things. You know what you want to order. You’re not nervous, exactly, but if you were, the dress wouldn’t show it.
Most women have a version of this. The interview piece. The thing you reach for when you need to walk into a room a certain way. It’s rarely your most expensive thing, or the thing that photographs well. It’s the thing that has something to do with your spine.
My friend called it her witness dress once. Which I thought was the best possible name for it. The dress that has witnessed every version of her that shows up on a first date… the nervous one and the confident one and the one who orders the wrong thing and the one who tells too much of the truth too fast. The dress has seen all of it and it doesn’t flinch.
She showed it to me once. I expected something dramatic. It was exactly as ordinary as she described. Cream, slip, bias cut, nothing remarkable at the neckline.
The power of a piece that compliments you.
This is what I think about when I’m designing. The woman getting dressed for the thing that matters. The piece that earns its place in the ritual. The garment that gets worn six times to the same kind of occasion because she’s never found a reason to change it.
Ordinary. Extraordinary. The difference is almost entirely invisible.
